Obituary: Robert “Bob” McCain
Kinston – Robert “Bob” McCain, 87, died Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Duke University Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be on Friday, August 19, at 1:30 PM at Westminster United Methodist Church, 1001 Westminster Lane, Kinston. Burial, with military honors will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 4488 U.S. Highway 70 West, Kinston.
A reception will follow at the Kinston Country Club from 4:00 until 6:00 PM, 1501 Country Club Drive, Kinston. Bob was born December 10, 1934, in West Long Branch, NJ to Gustav and Mae Hulse McCain. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served active duty with Air Police in Strategic Air Command at Travis Air Force Base from 1956-1962, where he met Pat. They were married in 1958. Thirteen days after their wedding Bob was deployed to Morocco for 18 months.
While stationed in Morocco he was assigned to guard President Eisenhower’s plane. He was stationed in Japan and the Azores. Upon being honorably discharged, the McCains relocated to Raleigh, and soon after, transferred to Kinston to begin their careers. He was a Corrections Officer at Wayne Correctional Center and retired in 1996. He was an active leader at Queen Street United Methodist Church and Westminster United Methodist Church. He was known for his quick with, and generous spirit and will be missed by the many friends who love him.
Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia “Pat” Aldridge McCain; daughter, Leah McCain Oettinger and husband, Brick, of Durham; son, Paul McCain and wife, Tahany “Tina” Dahir of Raleigh. He is preceded in death by his parents, his uncle and Aunt, Frank and Nellie Hulse (who raised him until he went into the Air Force), his uncle, Charlie Hulse, his sister, Edie McCain Fornino and husband, Jimmy, all from West Long Branch, NJ, his brother, Frank McCain and wife, Marilyn, of Oceanport, NJ, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Lucille Aldridge of Raleigh, NC.
