Jones County awarded Abandoned Manufactured Home Planning Grant

In March of 2021, Jones County Economic Development was awarded the Abandon Manufactured Home Planning Grant (AMH) by the NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR). This small planning grant is to inventory old dilapidated manufactured homes in the County. Once the County has an inventory, a second grant can be applied for to have these homes demolished and removed from the property.

The Economic Development Department has done a visual survey of the County and has found a number of homes that might qualify for this grant. The department is now reaching out to property owners to find interested individuals who would like to have these homes removed from their property. The grant will pay a large portion of the demolition cost; however, the property owner will be required to pay the cost over the grant amount.

Each home will be considered based on demolition cost and a property owners willingness to contribute to the project.

The finds for the AMH Grant were authorized by the State of North Carolina in 2008 under House Bill 1134. The purpose of the bill was to encourage counties to develop plans that provide for the deconstruction of abandon manufactured homes. The money to fund this grant comes from the State’s sold waste fund which comes from different disposal taxes paid on tires, appliances and building material. The County hopes we will be able to bring some of this grant money back to Jones County and clean up some eye sores and nuisance properties.
