On August 9, 2022, during a short ceremony at the Kinston Community Center, Females in Action (FiA) donated $1,600 to the Lenoir County Special Olympics. Lisa Sylvia, on behalf of FiA, presented the check to Lynetta Powell with Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Department and Ivey Price with Lenoir County Public Schools.
Lisa Sylvia let the Special Olympic committee know that, “You can use the money for anything you want and we can even recruit volunteers for your event in April.”
During the week of their National Olympics which ran July 15-22, 2022, Lenoir County FiA competed against other FiA groups around the nation in timed events. During the week FiA members collect donations for the Special Olympics. The donations were matched by anonymous donors for a total of $1,660.
The Special Olympics take place every year during Lenoir County Schools’ Spring break in April. Price mentions that the money will be great to help support the yearly event.
“The Special Olympics has a huge parade, characters and a lot of activities for kids especially face painting for those who don’t want to participate,” said Price. “Volunteers are always needed and welcome.”
The purpose of both organizations is to introduce as many people to fitness as possible no matter what their skill level is.
