Obituary: Jane Sutton

Bucklesberry-Jane Elizabeth Jones Sutton, 72, exchanged her earthly life for the splendor of seeing her Lord face-to-face on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

Jane was born in Lenoir County to the late Cecil and Junie Hardy Jones on October 8, 1949. For many years, Jane served the students and staff in Lenoir County Schools, initially working as a secretary at La Grange Elementary and later as the data manager at Frink Middle School. A warm welcome for those who entered the office along with her expertise and attention to detail made her the perfect fit for the role. Recognizing the need to spend more time in the day-to-day operations on the family farm, Jane left the school system to continue her work as the bookkeeper for her family. Around the farm, Jane worked right alongside the rest of her family through each activity. Whether setting out tobacco, killing hogs, or preparing vegetables for the freezer, Jane had her hand in it all. Busy from sun up to sun down, she was devoted to serving her family and lending a helping hand. Known as “Miss Jane” to the hands that helped on the farm, they found in Jane and Stanley much more than a place to work. In them, they found a second family and plenty to eat. If you went away hungry, it was your own fault.

An extension of Jane’s home and family was her church family at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Every time there was something going on at the church, you could rest assured that Jane would be there. Annual events such as the harvest sale and homecoming were made all the better with Jane’s organization. Working behind the scenes for the church day-to-day, she volunteered as the church’s secretary and maintained much of the paperwork that kept the church going. She was the church historian and kept up with the membership records for years. Alongside her husband, Stanley, the two created a place of welcome for every pastor that served the church. On Sunday morning, Jane was sure to be in worship, seated with her husband in their spot, three rows from the back on the right side. Family was Jane’s ultimate joy. Married to Stanley for over 49 years, the two raised their boys in a Christian home teaching love, respect, and the value of hard work.

When grandchildren came along, Jane added the title of “Granny” to her list of endearments as her heart filled with even more love to share. Each held a special place in her life, and she was sure to attend every event in which they participated.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 with Rev. Robert Flynn officiating. Committal will follow at Sutton Family Cemetery. Jane is survived by her husband of over 49 years, Stanley Sutton; children, Preston Sutton and wife, Sheila, and Freddie Sutton and wife, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Chase Sutton, Kinsleigh Sutton, Bella Sutton, and Callie Sutton; brother, Cecil Jones, Jr. and wife, Cindy; nephew, Austin Jones and wife, Jennifer; nieces, Melissa Armstrong and husband, Paul, and Kayla Jones; great-nieces and great-nephews, Avery Jones, Noah Armstrong, Easton Armstrong, Paisley Armstrong, and Ryker Taylor; along with many special cousins and extended family members she dearly loved.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2022 at Rouse Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Stanley Sutton, 1832 Sutton Shortcut Road, La Grange NC 28551. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home.
