Obituary: Lynwood Tilghman

August 14, 1943 – September 3, 2022

Kinston-Lynwood Tilghman, 79, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Lynwood was born in Lenoir County to the late John Franklin “Bud” Tilghman and Eula Mae Stallings Tilghman on August 14, 1943. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Glenwood Tilghman.

Naturally left-handed, Lynwood grew up in a time where left-handedness was constantly “corrected” by teachers. Slaps on the hand by his teacher were met with rebuttal from his father. The way his dad stood up for him from the beginning was always a prideful sentiment that Lynwood carried with him throughout life.

Faithfully and valiantly serving our country in the United States Army and National Guard, Lynwood retired as a plane and helicopter mechanic after 28 years of honorable service. His love of helicopters continued throughout his life, desiring to one day have his own. This desire never came to fruition, however, because the love of Corvettes was equally appealing and a tad bit stronger. Through the years, his Corvettes were the constant car of choice.

Raising their son, J.T., Lynwood made sure to take an active role in his life. From camping trips on their own to camping with the Boy Scouts, Lynwood was sure to be there. He became a Scout Master and ran his own troop, leading J.T. through the ranks beginning as a 4-year-old Cub Scout all the way through tenth grade. Tough and stern as a parent, Lynwood was also loving and fair.

Known to be a bit stubborn and bull-headed, Lynwood knew what he believed and was sure in his opinions. Always passionate in what he said, he was never without care for those to whom he spoke.

Over the past two years, Lynwood and Lisa became deeply involved with their church, Revival Mission. Recognizing Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Lynwood was dedicated to attending church as often as the doors were opened. Sometimes he walked in, other times he had to be pushed. No matter the circumstance, he was devoted to showing up to worship the Lord.

A service of love and remembrance with military honors will be held by the graveside at Westview Cemetery on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Gary Harris officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Lynwood is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lisa Tilghman; son, John “J.T.” Tilghman; daughter, Wendy Carol Seymour Prior; brother, Brad Tilghman and wife, Sandy; close family friends, Eddie Day, Jeffrey Garvey, and Terry Vause; and his devoted beagles, Jerry Lee and Gypsy.
