NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Secretary Reid Wilson to Visit Local Library

Kinston, NC: D. Reid Wilson, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, will be visiting the Neuse Regional Libraries at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 24. Secretary Wilson was invited by State Librarian Michelle Underhill to observe the many exciting activities that occur on an average day at the Library, including many invaluable services not traditionally associated with public libraries that have become an essential part of the Library’s mission.

Library staff will be on hand to answer questions about how the Library makes a direct impact on the everyday lives of the residents of Lenoir, Jones, and Greene counties through programs such as Let’s Connect, a one-on-one referral service to community resources provided by a certified social worker; as well as exciting new technologies such as a digital media studio for producing high-quality music, audio, and video; and the Library’s Digital Resource Rover, a mobile library and access point for library services.

“We are extremely honored by Secretary Wilson’s visit and to receive an opportunity to demonstrate the vital role libraries play in the lives of residents across our community,” said Melanie Morgan, Director of Libraries. “When Governor Roy Cooper visited the Library in 2021, it was a truly rewarding experience to be able to share the many innovative ways our Library serves our community. While the Library continues to offer access to books and other forms of information, we also offer a wide array of additional services that provide new opportunities to library users and make our locations across Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties true community centers.”

“Libraries serve as anchors in their communities, and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is proud to support libraries across our state,” said Secretary Reid Wilson. “Public libraries are trusted institutions that provide an increasing number of services to their communities, including 93% of North Carolina’s libraries partnering with local economic development organizations, 89% offering one-on-one technology consultations, and 89% partnering with local K-12 schools. I look forward to seeing firsthand some of the many ways Neuse Regional Libraries are providing critical services for residents in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties.”
