Richy Huneycutt: A champion for positive change in Kinston

March is Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the vital role of women in American history. Richy Huneycutt is one such woman who has made a significant impact. She is a positive force, known for her dedication to bringing about positive change and her belief in the power of collaboration.

Huneycutt's journey took off in 1979 when she moved to Kinston to work for the local newspaper. She immediately fell in love with the people and enjoyed telling their stories. She left Kinston for a short time to work in Burlington, but soon realized that Kinston was where she wanted to be. She returned in 1992 and began working at Lenoir Community College (LCC).

“Working at LCC has provided me so many opportunities to play a small part in the development and growth of the communities we serve,” said Huneycutt.

Huneycutt's leadership role was inspired by the wonderful mentors she has had throughout her life, particularly her parents, who taught her to be independent but also to call on others who have strengths she does not possess. She believes in the power of collaboration, stating "it takes a village" and working together, can accomplish so much. It is her mission to make a positive impact on people, particularly through her work at LCC, where she gets to see firsthand the difference that individuals can make in other people's lives.

Huneycutt has faced challenges early on in her roles.

“Sometimes you're not invited to the table, to coin a phrase, when you think you have something to offer, and that's okay,” said Huneycutt. “I've learned that if you do things with the right mindset and heart, then people will be attracted to that and want to be part of what you are trying to build and accomplish.”

Huneycutt has collaborated with many leaders to bring about positive change in Kinston. As an educator, she believes that strengthening the workforce through education and short-term training opportunities is essential to attracting new businesses and industries to the area. Huneycutt is aware of the many issues facing the county and city. However, she also knows that many people are working to find solutions, and she is committed to being a part of those efforts.

Balancing her involvement with personal and professional responsibilities can be challenging, but for Huneycutt, they are often one and the same. She enjoys being involved and loves working with students and colleagues at the college. She also teaches martial arts to children and adults, which provides a different creative outlet for her.

Huneycutt stays motivated and continues to inspire others to get involved and make a difference in Kinston by surrounding herself with people who challenge her and make her want to do better. She also finds inspiration in her family, who have made Kinston their home, and in the excitement of being a part of growth and positive change.

“There is so much more we have in our community and I consider myself blessed to be a small part of it,” said Huneycutt.

Looking to the future, Huneycutt plans to continue collaborating on initiatives that strengthen the community through education and training opportunities. She believes in the power of working together to bring about positive change and is committed to doing her part to make Kinston an even better place to work and live.
