Outstanding volunteers in Greene County honored with 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award
Snow Hill, NC – Samuel Tyler Carter and Salvador Abrego Tinoco from Greene County were recently awarded the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their community through volunteer service, showing concern and compassion for their neighbors.
Carter, who serves as the Fire Captain and Emergency Medical Technician for Fort Run Volunteer Fire & EMS, was nominated in the areas of Individual, Disaster, and Lifetime Achievement by fellow firefighters Derek Burress and Shawna McMillian-Jones. He has been serving his community since 2008, averaging over 250 hours of service each year.
Tinoco, nominated by Carolyn Newcomb and Laura Warren Exum, residents of the Town of Snow Hill, was recognized for his volunteer work in Beautification Projects. He donated his time, talent, and resources in cleaning and landscaping the Park on 4th Street as well as other abandoned properties in the town. He was nominated in the areas of Individual, Cultural, Environment, and Historically Underserved Populations.
Both award winners will be honored at the Greene County Commissioners Meeting on Monday, April 17th, at 7 pm. A Volunteer Reception will be held at the Greene County Senior Center at 5 pm, where certificates and pins from the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism will be awarded. Family and friends are invited to attend the ceremony.
The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award, created in 1979, is an important part of the proud history and tradition of volunteerism and community service in North Carolina. The recipients of this award represent the best in volunteer service and inspire others to make a positive difference in their communities.
