LCPS’s summer learning camps open in July; registration open now
Lenoir County Public Schools will offer its K-12 students an array of summer learning camps, including the popular Career Accelerator, which lets students explore a range of high-demand careers. Last summer’s Career Accelerator students looked into aviation careers with the help of Draken International at the Global TransPark.
An array of summer learning opportunities that promise to be fun as well as educational for K-12 students with Lenoir County Public Schools will debut in July.
Online registration is now open for all five programs: Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) for K-5 students, SEA for middle and high school students, Summer Bridge Academy for rising sixth graders, Career Accelerator for rising seventh graders and high school students and Summer Migrant Camp for all migrant students.
The simple registration form is at https:bit.ly/lcpssummer2023.
“Our expansive opportunities for K-12 students will spark excitement, fun and, all the while, learning,” Associate Superintendent Frances Herring said. “We feel strongly that providing our students with experiences in the summer make them stronger, more confident students when the new school year starts back.”
For all summer programs, LCPS provides transportation and free breakfast and lunch.
Here’s a closer look at the five programs:
SEA for K-5 students combines the long-running Read to Achieve program for grades first through third with focused, small-group academic instruction for all students. Read to Achieve is designed to ensure all students are reading on grade level when the new school year begins. The broader SEA instruction prepares students for advancing to the next grade.
“SEA is an excellent opportunity for students to keep their skills sharp and build confidence for the upcoming school year,” Stacy Cauley, elementary education director, said. “Summer camp is a place for small-group instruction, personalized learning and having fun!”
SEA for K-5 students is in session July 3-27 with classes Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Locations are Contentnea-Savannah K-8 School, Northwest Elementary School and Southwood Elementary School.
SEA for middle and high school will take a deep dive into grade level content to prepare students for the next grade level and/or course and credit recovery. School is in session July 3-27 with classes Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Locations are Contentnea-Savannah, Frink Middle, Rochelle Middle, Woodington Middle and North Lenoir, South Lenoir and Kinston high schools.
Summer Bridge Academy is a unique program with a singular focus – to prepare rising sixth graders for the big step up to middle school. In a middle school setting and with middle school teachers using grade-level content, students will get an early look at what awaits them in the new school year. Summer Bridge Academy operates July 3-27 with classes Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Locations are Contentnea-Savannah, Frink Middle, Rochelle Middle and Woodington Middle.
Career Accelerator offers rising seventh graders and high school students the opportunity to explore high-demand jobs through a series of immersive one- and two-week sessions that sample a range of career opportunities, from aviation to agriculture to engineering. Hands-on projects, field trips and visits with local experts are all part of the curriculum. Career Accelerator runs July 10-27 from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at North Lenoir, South Lenoir and Kinston high schools and at the Lenoir Community College Advanced Aerospace and Manufacturing Center.
Summer Migrant Camp is open to all migrant students. Along with academic instruction, the camp offers crafts and recreation opportunities and life-skills classes. The camp will operate Aug. 2-9 at La Grange Elementary School.
