Help Wanted: Lenoir County Tax Department Revenue Agent. Starting Salary: $31,500
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Under general supervision, performs posting and accounting of revenue, researching and analysis, and assisting citizens. Processes wage garnishments, bank attachments, rent attachments, escheated funds attachments and Sheriff levies; verifies, issues and updates Lenoir County beer and wine licenses; answers telephone, e-mail and in-person inquiries; scans check images for online upload to bank. Employee is responsible for considerable data entry work in recording tax payments and other data in computerized files. The employee will be working in a team environment under the direction of the Deputy Tax Collector.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Working knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act, other laws, and County ordinances and policies affecting the collection of real and personal property taxes.
• Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including the accurate handling and accounting of large sums of money.
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of bookkeeping.
• Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state or local laws, rules, and regulations.
• Skill in the operation of common office machines, including popular computer-driven word processing, and file maintenance programs, calculator, fax machine, copier, check and document scanners, and letter opener.
• Ability to compute figures rapidly and accurately.
• Ability to prepare tax collection records and reports.
• Ability to assist in the preparation of detailed financial reports.
• Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public, lawyers, and businesses.
• Multitasking ability (i.e., the ability to handle more than one job function at a time with accuracy and diplomacy.)
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Tax related field experience preferred but not required. Graduation from high school and three years of experience in administrative, or financial work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess strong analytical, computer, cash handling, verbal and written communications skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must meet qualifications for coverage under blanket bond. Must successfully complete Fundamentals of Tax Collection and Property Tax Listing and Assessing within the first two years of employment.
