Obituary: Pinkey Joyner Harper

Pinkey Joyner Harper, 104, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

She was born in Snow Hill on August 7, 1918, to Sarah Ginn Joyner and Samuel Johnston Joyner. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Woodrow Simpson Harper, and her sisters, Natalie Sugg, Verna Mitchell, Elsie Massengill, and Margaret King. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Through the years she was active in the Democratic politics, serving as precinct chairman and on the state Democratic Executive Committee. She was a long-time member of the Home Demonstration Club, holding local and state offices. She was a charter member and past president of the Lenoir County Shrinettes. She was a faithful and loyal member of the Woodington Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees.

She loved to travel, having been in every state, Canadian Province, and eight foreign countries. She was an avid Bridge player. She drove herself to games at Fairfield Center, friends’ homes, and to Snow Hill until she gave up driving at the age of 100. When she no longer drove, she had a driver to pick her up and take her to her games.

She was an accomplished artist, seamstress, and gardener. She continued to mow her own lawn on a riding mower until her 90’s.

She was a long-time employee of Brodys department store. She said she put more shoes on more women’s feet in Eastern NC than anyone could count.

At the age of 100, she left her home and moved to Heritage Elite Assisted Living, where she was the oldest resident, still not using a walker or cane and wearing heels. She often said, “I may be the oldest, but I am the healthiest.”

She remained a very feisty lady until the end and never could accept being told no by anyone. She could be quite “salty” at times and there are many “Pinkey Stories” to be told.

The family would like to thank the staff and management of Heritage Elite for the kindness shown to “Miss Pinkey”. She was a handful at times, and they always went above and beyond for her.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Westview Cemetery with Reverend Mike Whatley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodington Methodist Church in care of Gwen Rouse, 4079 Liddell Road, Seven Springs, NC 28578.
