Library Digital Resource Rover takes snack drive to the community
By Amber Hargett, Engagement Librarian
The Neuse Regional Libraries’ Digital Resource Rover (DRR) hit the road this summer with a new schedule specifically for the summer months. Thanks to partnerships with the Kinston Housing Authority, Greene Lamp Head Start, local child care centers, and county agencies in Lenoir, Jones, and Greene Counties, the DRR has the opportunity to visit even more of our youngest patrons while continuing to offer multigenerational programming and library services throughout our communities.
Besides checking out books, patrons can take advantage of increased access to technology and a variety of programming services ranging from workforce development to digital media training, STEM education, and early literacy. When on location, the DRR has an awning that can be extended for shade as well as tables and chairs for storytimes and other programs. Little ones can enjoy storytime from the comfort of the large storytime rug. Job seekers can update their resumes and conduct job searches while students can choose their own adventure with STEM experiments and storytimes. Additionally, patrons can register on the DRR for the Summer Reading Program prepared by our Youth Services Team.
When children visit the DRR, they are treated to a healthy snack as part of the check out process. During the summer months, instead of picking one snack from the snack box, they receive a paper lunch bag filled with three healthy snacks. It is extremely rewarding to see the kids' faces light up when they receive their snack bags.
This is where we are seeking the community’s support. We are hosting a snack drive for the DRR’s summer snack bag project. We are very appreciative of the generous donations we have received from the community, local churches, and the Summer Reading Program participants taking part in the Community Kindness challenge thus far. Anyone interested in contributing to the project can drop off their donations at any Neuse Regional Library. We can accept non-perishable, nut-free snack items such as: granola bars, goldfish, fruit cups, cheese crackers, fruit snacks, and cookies.
Please look for the DRR in your neighborhood. We make frequent stops across all three counties in our region in addition to participating in local community events and festivals. If you would like to request the DRR to attend your community event, please visit the Neuse Regional Libraries’ website neuselibrary.org/drr. A complete summer schedule of DRR stops can be found there as well.
The Digital Resource Rover is made possible through grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The DRR also received community support from a Lenoir County Government American Rescue Plan Act grant, Lenoir UNC Health Care, and the First National Bank.
If you have any questions about the Digital Resource Rover, services provided, stop suggestions or wish to become a sponsor, please feel free to contact the Engagement Librarian at 252-527-7066, ext. 137 or via email at drr@neuselibrary.org.
