Lenoir Community College is now offering a Medical Assisting Diploma Program in addition to its degree program. This program will allow students to complete their medical assistant education and training in three semesters.
Upon completion of the diploma program, students are eligible to apply for the National Certification Exam by AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants) or any other medical assisting credentialing exam.
"The diploma program simply allows students to enter the workforce faster while still ensuring their education and skill meet and exceed the requirements," says LCC Medical Assistant Program Chair Rebecca Dail.
The LCC medical assisting program works closely with the practices in our community to meet their needs as well as the graduates. "LCC has a great program. It has very supportive instructors,” says Cassidy Winfield, a Medical Assistant graduate. “It definitely has created a pathway into healthcare for me as I continue my education and goals of moving up in healthcare.”
Dail explained that medical assistants are multi-skilled healthcare professionals assisting physicians in an ambulatory setting. Students are taught both administrative and clinical skills preparing them to work under the direct supervision of a physician.
"There is currently a high demand for medical assistants. The College has been contacted many times regarding recruiting students as employees. After completing this program, students are almost guaranteed to receive a position in a medical office," she said.
Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited medical assisting programs may be
eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants Certification Examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices or any outpatient setting.
Students may also decide to continue with their AAS degree, which would mean spending two additional semesters at LCC. "This track allows students to advance in health care. Most individuals who choose to obtain this degree are looking to advance in the healthcare arena as a Practice Manager, take more of a leadership role or continue their education in another healthcare-related field," according to Dail.
The skills that students will spend time learning include but are not limited to; scheduling appointments, insurance, accounts payable and receivable, assisting the physician with exams and procedures, obtaining vital signs, performing EKG, phlebotomy, administering medication, and performing basic laboratory tests.
