Hit & Run driver arrested for DWI

On October 10, 2024, at approximately 9:21 PM, officers from the Kinston Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle crash on the 1000 block of Westover Avenue. While en route, they were informed that the driver had fled the scene on foot. Upon arriving, officers gathered information from a witness indicating that the driver had run into the woods near Elizabeth Drive. A search was conducted, leading to the discovery of 33-year-old Jesse Shimer of Kinston in the woods. Shimer was taken into custody and charged with driving while impaired, resisting a public officer, hit and run, failure to report a crash, and malicious conduct by a prisoner. He is currently being held in the Lenoir County Jail under a secured bond.
