Local 7-year-old inspires community through music
At just seven years old, Contentnea-Savannah student Cameron Holder is making waves in the local music scene. The second grader, who recently showcased his original song, is inspiring peers and adults alike with his passion for music and his dedication to pursuing his dreams.
Holder’s journey into music began early, influenced by a family deeply rooted in musical traditions. “My dad came up with the lyrics and the music, and my uncle Peasy made the beat,” Holder said. “I want everybody to know I made the song with my voice.”
His parents, Delmar and Jonika Holder, describe their son as a naturally talented and driven young musician. According to Delmar, music has been a constant in Cameron’s life. “He’s been around music ever since he was born,” Delmar said. “From being in a stroller, he’s been exposed to it. I’ve made music, his mom sings, and his uncle is a drummer. It’s always been a part of him.”
Cameron’s uncle, Rodney Bates, who serves as his business manager, also reflects on the boy’s early interest in music. “When he was about three years old, he would carry my drumsticks and say he was helping me,” Bates said. “He’s always loved the drums, and now he’s channeling that passion into something bigger.”
Cameron’s current musical journey includes a song that he plans to release on Valentine’s Day. He is already performing at school events, church gatherings, and even opening for Bates’ cover band, Jet Stream. Delmar notes that the community’s support has been instrumental. “We’ve talked to his school, and they’re on board with him performing at pep rallies. He’s also going from event to event, and the encouragement from everyone around him makes a huge difference.”
Despite his early success, Cameron remains grounded and focused on his future aspirations. “I want to play drums, guitars, and trumpets,” he said. “I have a drum set at my dad’s house, and I practice a lot.”
The young musician’s parents and uncle emphasize the importance of fostering his happiness and growth. “We constantly ask him if he enjoys what he’s doing, and he loves it,” Bates said. “My main objective as his uncle is to ensure he’s happy.”
Cameron’s mother, Jonika, sees her son’s musical gift as something special for the community. “I feel like Cameron’s gift is a light, even to his friends at school,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see someone use their talent for a positive reason.”
Holder’s musical endeavors are already gaining traction in the local area, with plans for his performances to reach broader audiences. Delmar hopes the exposure will encourage other children to explore their talents. “With support from parents, family, and the community, kids can achieve amazing things,” Delmar said. “It’s not something you see every day, and it’s worth nurturing.”
When asked what message he’d like to share with the community, Cameron expressed a hope to inspire others. “I want kids to know they can do the same thing I’m doing,” he said.
Holder’s family remains steadfast in their support. “We love you, Cameron,” Bates said during the interview. “Keep doing what makes you happy.”
Cameron concluded with a heartfelt wish: “When I grow up, I want to travel all around the world with my song, with my dad and Uncle Bates.”
The young musician’s determination and enthusiasm serve as a reminder that creativity and hard work can begin at any age, inspiring others to follow their passions.
