Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office updates public on arrest of Ryan Keith Everett and other cases

The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Wednesday to provide updates on the arrest of Ryan Keith Everett and ongoing investigations, including an armed robbery involving Octavius McCoy and Monica Munoz. Sheriff Jackie Rogers emphasized collaboration and the resolution of communication challenges within the justice system.

Everett, who had been the subject of a six-day manhunt, was apprehended Tuesday night in Graham, N.C., after attempting to use counterfeit money at a Days Inn. “The Graham Police Department received a call regarding a white male using counterfeit money. When officers arrived, the suspect fled but was later apprehended,” Rogers said. Everett, who initially provided a false identity, was identified as the wanted suspect from Kinston. He is currently held in Alamance County Jail.

Rogers addressed concerns about the arrest process, clarifying an earlier misstep. “There was a failure to appear warrant that should not have been issued. This was a communication issue between the magistrate’s office and district court judges,” Rogers said. He affirmed that new protocols are in place to prevent similar occurrences and maintained confidence in the judiciary. “Our judges do a great job and are committed to public safety.”

Rogers also updated the public on the well-being of a woman who had been with Everett during the manhunt. She returned safely to Lenoir County and is cooperating with deputies.

The sheriff detailed another case involving McCoy and Munoz, linked to a robbery at Fall Creek Store on Falling Creek Road. Investigators identified McCoy as the suspect, and deputies executed a search warrant at his residence. “McCoy refused to come out despite multiple attempts, including deploying gas and breaching the front door with the BearCat,” Rogers said. McCoy was ultimately located hiding in a closet and arrested.

Rogers connected McCoy to an additional armed robbery at a vape shop in La Grange, underscoring investigators’ diligent work. “It was great work by the investigators to link him to that incident,” he said.

Rogers concluded by praising law enforcement and the community for their efforts. “The citizens came forward with critical information about suspicious activities. Their cooperation was outstanding and helped us resolve these cases,” he said. He urged continued vigilance as the holiday season approaches, acknowledging an uptick in crime during this time. “The Sheriff’s Office is here to protect, and we will use all resources to ensure safety.”
