Obituary - Robert Lonn Hood, Jr.

Robert Lonn Hood, Jr. died on Nov. 20, 2024, at McGregor Down Health Center in Greenville, N.C., after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 60.

Known to friends as Lonn, he was raised in Pink Hill, the son of pharmacist R.L. Hood and Rowena Buie. He was preceded in death by both parents.

Lonn grew up in Pink Hill, where he became a familiar face in the community while working at his family’s business, R.L. Hood Pharmacy. He attended Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston, excelling in academics and athletics, and was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving its highest ranks.

As a youth, Lonn developed a strong work ethic, spending summers in tobacco fields and working in the cutting room at Har-Scott Co. Inc., an apparel manufacturing company. However, it was at his family’s business, working alongside his parents and sister, that he developed his gift for building relationships and helping others.

At Parrott Academy, Lonn was a standout student. He studied challenging subjects such as Latin and Biology, where he excelled due to his sharp mind and analytical skills. He also enjoyed playing word games, which showcased his linguistic aptitude.

Lonn’s passion for basketball was central to his youth. His home became a haven for other basketball lovers, and he would never miss a chance to play — even if it meant clearing snow off the court to ensure games could go on. His dedication and love of the game earned him recognition at Parrott, where he played from seventh through twelfth grade, and became a three-year varsity player lettering in his final three seasons.

After graduating high school, Lonn attended East Carolina University in Greenville, earning a degree in business and marketing. During college, he worked at the ECU Health Medical Center pharmacy, further developing his interpersonal skills and work ethic.

It was at ECU where his ability to connect with people came together with his career. He had a natural talent for sales and marketing. He worked in auto sales and the burgeoning cellular industry, before finding his true calling in the mortgage industry.

Lonn moved to Cary, N.C. and began a career in the mortgage industry as a document courier before quickly rising to become a top-producing loan officer. He had an enduring work ethic and would drive all over the state to get documents signed. He eventually founded Pathway Financial, a successful mortgage company in Raleigh, which he built from the ground up through hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit learned in his parent’s business.

Later, Lonn faced significant challenges, including a period of personal struggle. However, he emerged with a renewed purpose and a deep appreciation for the power of redemption and transformation through the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Relocating to Wilmington, Lonn began a new career path working in and managing halfway houses where he touched many lives. It was there that he had his ultimate impact connecting with and helping others. In this work, he found a profound sense of purpose, offering encouragement, guidance and a listening ear. He became a source of hope and support for many, often fielding calls and messages from those seeking advice or reassurance. He will be missed.

Retiring early due to declining health, Lonn relocated back to Lenoir County in recent years, residing in the Woodington area at the time of his passing.

He is survived by his daughter Emillie Hood of Raleigh and his sister Tay Rett Hood of Beulaville. No service is planned at this time.
