Dr. Mahari Freeman to Return as Soprano Soloist for Handel’s “Messiah”

The Kinston/Lenoir Community Chorus is thrilled to welcome back Dr. Mahari Freeman as the soprano soloist for the 24th annual performance of Handel’s Messiah on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. This cherished community tradition will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 N. Herritage St., accompanied by the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra.

Dr. Freeman’s illustrious career spans prestigious performances and academic excellence. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.M.), University of Michigan (M.M.), and University of South Carolina (D.M.A.), all in voice performance, Freeman has captivated audiences with her soprano interpretations of oratorio masterpieces. Her repertoire includes Messiah, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Bach’s Coffee Cantata and cantatas 51 and 61, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, among others.
Freeman’s operatic roles highlight her versatility, including Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and the title role in Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon. She achieved a career milestone in 2017 as a soloist in the world premiere of Hyo-Won Woo’s Requiem aeternam with the Sistine Chapel Choir. She has also participated in esteemed young artist programs, such as the Aspen Music School and Festival and the Le Chiavi Institute of Bel Canto Studies.
Currently residing in Charlotte, Freeman is the Music Department Chair at Central Piedmont Community College, where she also serves on the voice faculty. She lives with her husband and son and continues to inspire audiences with her artistry.
