Congressman Don Davis reflects on progress, pledges continued advocacy for eastern NC

Dear Neighbor,

The 118th Congress brought its share of obstacles, yet we rose to the occasion, steadfast in our mission to uplift families in eastern NC. We have fostered hope and optimism by preventing devastating job cuts, transforming healthcare, and delivering critical support to disaster survivors statewide.

Recognizing that eastern NC is among our nation's most economically distressed regions, we prioritized actions to fortify and expand our economy. We successfully prevented the U.S. Air Force from eliminating an F-15E Strike Eagle squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, preventing 520 job cuts. Through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2025, we secured the necessary time to devise a more sustainable plan. Additionally, we fought against a proposed FDA menthol ban that threatened over 6,000 jobs in our state while securing essential economic assistance for struggling farmers. Our collaboration with Newport News Shipbuilding and support for the Global TransPark pave the way for a brighter future of good-paying jobs.

We are also transforming healthcare in eastern North Carolina. As a co-chair of the State Medicaid Caucus in the US House of Representatives, we successfully advocated for Medicaid expansion in our state. Just one year after this expansion, we are witnessing record enrollment. We have also broken ground on the East Carolina University Center for Medical Education, positioning our region to provide more accessible and affordable healthcare, save rural hospitals, and create over 4,700 jobs. Lastly, we authored bills helping our nation’s heroes—disabled veterans.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene and a devastating drought, disaster survivors and farmers in our state have faced severe challenges. Thanks to the successful passage of H.R. 10545, the American Relief Act of 2025, North Carolina will receive over $8 billion in disaster assistance and an estimated $674 million in agricultural assistance, ensuring critical support for recovery.

While we have accomplished significant milestones during the 118th Congress, we know there's more work ahead. The high cost of living remains a challenge for many. However, our dedication to being a powerful voice in Congress and a tireless champion for the East remains unwavering.

Sincerely,

Congressman Don Davis
