Obituary: James “Dexter” Barnett

James “Dexter” Barnett, 73, of Jackson Heights, peacefully passed away early Sunday morning, February 11th at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, J.B. Barnett, his mother, Maxine Gordon Barnett, and his youngest brother, Danny Barnett. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy Hardison Barnett, his sons, Justin Barnett (wife Kasey) and Jarrett Barnett, and his grandchildren, Taryn Joy Barnett and Jackson Blade Barnett. He is also survived by his brothers, Vernon “Bee” Barnett and Dempsey Barnett, and his sister, Caroline Hardison Barnett.

Dexter was always a hardworking man of exemplary moral character, and this led him to being a very successful businessman as the owner and operator of the family business, Barnett Truck Lines. After leaving the trucking business, he became an educator and served as a public-school teacher in Lenoir County until his retirement. He was beloved by his many coworkers and students.

Dexter was a man with a heart of gold. He’d give to anyone in need. He volunteered his time to help seniors and children in various ways over the years. He coached many children in baseball, basketball, and football in the 80’s and 90’s. He was a devout Christian that served his church faithfully for many years. He served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and trustee of Jackson Heights OFWB Church until his health began to fail. He was truly the epitome of a “good man.” Because of his faith in Jesus Christ, Dexter’s family and many friends are comforted in knowing that he is now with the Lord in heaven.

The services to remember, honor, and celebrate his life will be held at Jackson Heights OFWB Church on Friday, February 16th. Visitation will be from 5:00pm – 6:00pm, and the funeral service will follow. Dexter’s good friend, the Rev. Terry Dennis will be officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jackson Heights OFWB Church. The monies donated will be used to go towards the purchase of new outdoor LED church sign. Donations can be mailed to the church or be made online at jacksonheightsofwb.com. The church address is 285 Camellia St., Kinston, NC 28504.
