Kinston Police's proactive measures cut violent crime rates

Last year the Kinston Police Department outlined its strategic objectives, focusing on reducing violent crime through proactive measures and enhancing community relations. Those goals have paid off with a reduction in murders and violent crime.
According to Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette, the department identified critical goals, including "lowering violent crime with proactive policing and community outreach" and leveraging partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement to improve public safety and trust within the community.
"Our dedicated officers and staff members are here 24/7/365, working diligently to protect our citizens, often putting their own families on the back burner to ensure our community is safely patrolled," Goyette remarked, emphasizing the commitment of the Kinston Police Department's personnel.
The department's plans are not limited to immediate crime reduction. Efforts are also being made to reinforce the bond between law enforcement and the Kinston community through transparency and cooperation.
"It’s a great feeling when our city council and city manager support our efforts as well," Goyette added, highlighting the importance of collaboration with local government in achieving the department's goals.
Looking ahead, one of the primary objectives for the Kinston Police Department is to address staffing needs. Goyette revealed the department is actively seeking to fill nine vacant police positions with candidates who meet the KPD's standards, aiming for a full complement of 67 officers by August 1st.
"Once fully staffed, I anticipate more officers on the street, in our schools, and helping out with community events," Goyette said, outlining the expected benefits of achieving this staffing goal.
The initiative to boost manpower is part of a broader strategy to enhance law enforcement presence and effectiveness throughout Kinston, ensuring a safer environment for both residents and visitors. As the department moves forward with its objectives, the focus remains on building a stronger, more connected community through effective policing and engagement.
