KPD arrests suspect in shooting that wounded local man

KPD Detectives obtained warrants on Zyshawn Smith (20) for Discharging a Firearm into Occupied Property Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
On February 2, 2024, KPD's Violent Crime Action Team apprehended Smith without further incident. Smith was placed in the LC Jail under no bond.

On Friday, January 26, 2024, at approximately 8 p.m., members of the Kinston Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of Williams St. in reference to a report of a subject that had been shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered Don’Tavis Coppedge (22) of Kinston suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Investigators responded to the scene and determined that the assailant(s) fired a single shot through a bedroom window, striking Coppedge. Coppedge was taken to ECU Health Center in Greenville, where he is receiving treatment.
