Paving the path to literacy Kinston Community Health Center book drive
Dear Editor
I am writing to provide an update about the Kinston Community Health Center “Battle of the Books Book Drive”. As an intern in the Community Outreach Department at Kinston Community Health Center, I have been organizing a book drive aimed to support learning and promote literacy for children within our community. Thanks to the help of Kinston Community Health Center and the “Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority" we have collected about 600 new and/or gently used books for elementary school-aged children between the ages of five and nine.
In addition to this, we have also received contributions from various organizations in recent months. Notable participants include the Lenoir Community College NC Works Career Center, Greene Lamp, Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Green Counties, Neuse Public Library, Kinston High School Media Center, and M & D gifts, among others. Successfully, resulting in the collection of over 1,600 books that will be donated to the AKA Sorority and residents in our community.
To kick off the book drive, Kinston Community Health Center and Grainger Stadium collaborated to organize a contest, inviting different organizations to take part and compete in collecting the highest number of books. With great thanks to Jon Clemmons, Granger Stadium manager, the winning organization was rewarded with six complimentary box seats and the honor of throwing the first pitch at the previous game held on Sunday, April 7th. The winner of the competition, the AKA sorority is pictured below with Mayor Pro Tem Hardy. They were able to garner more than 800 books.
As a result of this remarkable achievement, a donation box with the label "give a book take a book" has been placed outside Kinston Community Health Center. This box was generously built and donated by the East Carolina Boy Scouts Council, pictured below. They installed this box in front of the center to ensure accessibility to our patients and the residents in the community.
