Kinston man charged with attempted murder after shooting incident

A 68-year-old Kinston man is in custody after being charged with attempted first degree murder by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.

Lionel Keys was arrested and received the murder charge, along with a charge of discharging a weapon into occupied property following a shooting in the 1400 block of Hamilton Boulevard in Kinston. LCSO deputies were dispatched to the scene shortly after 11:30 this morning in reference to a report of a person being shot.

The victim, Leejerald Namath Rhodes, 53, of Kinston, was shot in the right arm with a long gun. He was transported to UNC Health Lenoir, where he was treated for his injuries.

While on the scene, LCSO detectives and A-Shift deputies developed Keys as the suspect, took him into custody and transported him to the Lenoir County Magistrates Office, where he received no bond.
