Obituary: Mr. Gary Reynolds Askew

LaGrange: Mr. Gary Reynolds Askew, age 79, passed away at his home Friday evening, June 21st, with the family he so loved by his side. Born June 3, 1945, Gary was the son of Roscoe Needham Askew and Kathryn Jones Askew (Seymour).

Gary was reared in the Arba Community of Greene County and was a lifelong member of Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church. Like many of his generation, Gary grew up on the family farm and attended to the chores that entailed. Following graduation from Greene Central High School, he attended NC State University where he graduated from the Agricultural Institute. Gary returned to Greene County and began a lifelong career in farming and expanded into swine production.

Devoted to his family, Gary was husband of 56 years to his beloved wife, a loving and providing father to his three children, and a doting grandfather to his four grandchildren.

In addition to his mother and father, Gary was preceded in death by his stepfather, Fred Seymour; and brother, Fenton Askew.

His surviving family includes his devoted wife, Angie Barrow Askew; children, Reynolds Askew and wife Sherry of Kinston, Shannon Askew of LaGrange, and Ross Askew and wife Keri of LaGrange; grandchildren, Nora and her husband Seth who reside in Willow Spring, Cody, Steele, and Sloan, all of LaGrange; a sister, Delores Askew Jones of Florence, SC; and a very special daughter-in-love, Brande Grant Watson of Snow Hill.

Funeral Services will be held graveside 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 25th, at the Mewborn Family Cemetery with Reverend Leon Grubbs and Reverend Percy Cunningham officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 – 8 PM at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Gary’s friends, neighbors, and fellow farmers, who have shown many acts of kindness to him and the family during his illness this year; your kindness will never be forgotten.
