Obituary: Lowell Thomas Hardy

LaGrange: Mr. Lowell Thomas Hardy, known best as “Goo”, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 10, 2024, at his home. A native of the Jason Community of Greene County, he was born July 31, 1934, the son of Carl Greene Hardy, Sr. and Roberta Barnes Hardy.

A talented musician with the acoustic guitar, Goo was a member of the Pine State Playboys Band and had performed throughout North Carolina including numerous appearances on local television stations. In their prime, the band had recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and were members of the Packhouse Jamboree. After several years playing and performing, Goo laid the guitar down but always cherished the memories and friendships made.

After completing a refrigeration and repair curriculum at Lenoir Community College, he and his wife operated Hardy’s Appliance Sales and Service in La Grange from 1960 until 1983. Goo was a longtime fixture in the appliance department at Lowes where he worked until he was in his eighties and even debated then if it was truly time to retire.

Goo was a member of Harrell’s Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church and loved the events and outings of the Golden Circle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Greene Hardy, Jr.

His surviving family includes his beloved wife of 67 years, Barbara Ann Ham Hardy of the home; daughters, Donna Hardy Killette and husband Jeff, and Tracy Hardy Arthur and husband Michael, all of La Grange; a grandson and apple of the eye, Randy Arthur of La Grange; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hardy of La Grange and Naomi Ham of Snow Hill; and special cousins, Baxter Hardy and Gary Mewborn both of La Grange.

Funeral Services will be held 7 PM Friday, July 12th at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with Pastor Jeff Hayes and Pastor Scott Hardy officiating. Committal Services will be held privately for the family at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will greet friends and extended relatives in the hour prior to Friday’s service from 6:00 – 6:45 PM at the funeral home and other times at the family residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to Harrell’s Chapel OFWB Church (for the Golden Circle), c/o Arlene McCoy Harper, 78 Dixon Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580. Online condolences may be made at www.taylor-tyson.com
