Obituary: Marvin Gilbert Vick, Jr

Marvin Gilbert Vick, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024. Born in Kinston, NC on March 5, 1947, Marvin was the son of the late Marvin Gilbert Vick, Sr. and Catherine Rucker Vick.

Marvin graduated from Grainger High School in 1965. In 1969, he joined the Coast Guard and was stationed at Opa Locka Air Station in Opa Locka, FL, where he served as a yeoman until 1973. He then attended East Carolina University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1975 and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honorary society.

Marvin was passionate about the banking industry - starting with Planters National Bank as a loan officer in Rocky Mount, Greensboro, and Wilmington, NC, followed by the role of City Executive at First Union Bank in Lumberton, NC. He was instrumental in the startup of New East Bank of Goldsboro and was established as the first President in 1989. He moved on to work as a financial advisor at Merril Lynch in Wilson, Legg Mason in Rocky Mount, and then Ferris Baker Watts, RBC, Ameriprise, and Commonwealth in Wilmington. Marvin was a lifelong Rotarian, serving as Rotary President in Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Wilmington. He was passionate about Rotary’s mission and serving his community.

Marvin had a special love for Atlantic Beach and his time spent there during childhood with his cousins and family at their beach house. In 1984, he and his father purchased a beach house in Surf City on Topsail Island, where he spent countless hours tinkering, body surfing, boating, fishing, and entertaining with family and friends. Marvin loved dancing and singing, even to his last days, and enjoyed sitting on the porch with his wife, Georgia, with a cold beer in one hand listening to the oldies. He was known for being an excellent conversationalist with the strongest handshake around. Our social butterfly has flown away to be with the Lord.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Georgia Bone Vick; former wife and mother of his children, Roberta Lowe Vick; daughter, Deanna Vick Wells; son-in-law, Todd Joseph Wells; son, Marvin Grey Vick; daughter-in-law, Sarah Kathleen Vick; stepdaughter, Amanda Sessoms Benson; and stepson, Matthew Bert Sessoms, all of Wilmington, NC.
