Deputy Involved Shooting in Greene County

One subject died after Greene County Deputies responded to a Breaking and Entering in progress.

On Sunday 07/28/2024 around 10:00 am, Greene County Deputies along with Snow Hill PD, responded to a residence on Judge Hardy St in Maury, in reference to a breaking and entering in progress. Upon arriving on the scene, Deputies met with the person residing at the residence, who had fled after a male subject entered the person’s home. The resident advised Deputies that the male subject was still in the home, at which time Law Enforcement approached the residence and the male subject could be seen in the home. Once a Deputy made contact with the male inside the residence, a fight ensued between the Deputy and the male subject which resulted in the Deputy shooting the male who was later identified as 54-year-old Willie Thomas Lovett. Deputies immediately called for EMS and began attempting life-saving measures, however unfortunately Lovett passed due to his injuries. Lovett’s motive for entering the home at this time are still under investigation. Sheriff Sasser contacted the NC SBI to investigate the deputy-involved shooting, which is customary. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the breaking and entering.

In an unrelated incident, Thursday night 07/25/2024 around 8:20 pm, Greene County Deputies responded to Maury Supply where a 21-year-old male suffered a superficial gunshot wound to the leg. The male victim was approached by an unknown group of males in a vehicle outside the store, at which time someone from the vehicle fired at the victim and fled the scene. The victim luckily suffered only a minor injury. Investigators are still trying to find the motive behind the shooting incident.
