Stewart William Smith, also known as “Stuball”, age 82, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at his home in Kinston. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Horace Smith and Alice Ruth Stewart Smith, along with his beloved wife of 40 years, Eva June Herring Smith.
Stewart was born in College Park, Maryland on May 30, 1942. He grew up on a 100-acre farm located on Sharon School Road in Iredell County, North Carolina. In 1960, he graduated from Celeste Henkel High School in Statesville, NC where he lettered in football, baseball, and basketball, once pitching a no-hitter his senior year.
He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College located in Hickory, NC in 1964 with a BS in Education, and on September 1, 1964 he began working for the school system in Red Springs, NC. In 1969, he moved to Snow Hill, NC and began working at Greene Central High School where he taught economics, women’s basketball, men’s football, and driver’s education. After many years of teaching in the school system, Stewart decided to semi-retire, but he continued to work online with the driver’s education program of North Carolina.
Apart from his love of education, he loved visiting his favorite place – Ocracoke Island, NC – where he was a regular since the 70’s, back when you had to bring your own food and water when you visited. There he loved fishing, searching for seashells, and just enjoying time spent with those around him.
