Greene County Commissioner Derek Burress Appointed Vice-Chair of State Rehabilitation Council

Greene County Commissioner Derek Burress has been appointed Vice-Chair of the North Carolina State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) during their quarterly meeting on Friday, September 13. This appointment highlights Burress’s exceptional dedication to advancing the rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. He succeeds Sharon Nellenbach of Hickory, NC.

Under the leadership of Chair Michael Maybee of Boone, the SRC plays a critical role in enhancing employment and independent living opportunities for people with disabilities throughout North Carolina. The council collaborates closely with the NCDHHS Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities, providing essential guidance, policy recommendations, and strategic direction.

Appointed by North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore, Burress brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Having previously served on the consumer input and policy review committees, he will now join the executive committee, overseeing the council's entire operation.

As one of only two members from eastern North Carolina, alongside James Jones of Fayetteville, Burress will ensure that regional perspectives are well-represented. His leadership as Vice-Chair is expected to strengthen the SRC’s efforts to promote equality and improve the lives of North Carolinians with disabilities.

This appointment underscores Burress’s outstanding service and unwavering commitment to his community, marking a significant achievement for Greene County. His new role promises to drive impactful advancements in the state’s rehabilitation services.
