Kinston Major saves child's life with CPR, receives lifesaving award

Major Turner of the Kinston Police Department is being hailed as a hero after his quick thinking and training saved the life of a six-year-old child on Monday morning.

The incident occurred January 27, 2025, just before 8:00 a.m., as Major Turner was driving to work. He noticed a vehicle on the side of the road with its emergency flashers activated. Sensing something was wrong, he stopped to check on the family, who were visibly distressed.

The family explained that their child was unresponsive and not breathing. Without hesitation, Major Turner began administering CPR. His swift actions were critical, and shortly after he started CPR, the child regained the ability to breathe.

The child was transported to UNC Lenoir Hospital, where they received treatment and were later released.

“I’m extremely grateful Major Turner was in the right place at the right time,” said Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette. “His actions serve as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergency situations and the impact that quick thinking and training can have in saving lives.”

Major Turner’s efforts have earned him the Kinston Police Department Lifesaving Award.

City of Kinston Mayor Dontario Hardy also praised Major Turner’s actions, saying, “As Mayor of the City of Kinston, I am honored to recognize the incredible courage and quick thinking demonstrated by Major Turner of the Kinston Police Department. His selfless actions on the morning of January 27, 2025, in saving the life of a six-year-old child exemplify the highest standards of dedication, training, and compassion.

“On behalf of the City of Kinston, I extend my deepest gratitude to Major Turner for his bravery and exceptional service. I also commend the Kinston Police Department for their ongoing commitment to excellence and for fostering a culture of professionalism and care. Major Turner’s receipt of the Lifesaving Award is a well-deserved recognition of his heroism, and we are proud to have him as a leader in our city.”

This heroic act underscores the importance of CPR training and emergency preparedness, both for first responders and the community at large. Major Turner’s actions not only saved a life but also serve as a reminder of the difference one individual can make in a moment of crisis.
