Lenoir County Public Schools adjusts calendar to make up for winter weather
The Lenoir County Board of Education has approved a plan to adjust the school calendar in order to make up for instructional time lost due to recent winter weather. The decision was made at the board's regular meeting on February 3, 2025.
February 14, previously designated as an optional teacher workday, will now be a regular full school day for students.
March 13, which was scheduled as an early release day for students, will now be a full school day.
These changes will ensure that students receive the required amount of instructional time for the academic year. According to the board, the traditional school calendar has 66 hours of instruction in excess of what is required by the state. The decision to make up one and a half days of instruction was made to maintain flexibility should there be additional inclement weather. The state of North Carolina discourages virtual learning days, so the district is focusing on in-person instruction to make up the missed time.
The board also discussed how employees could make up for missed work time, with opportunities to stay late and work on Saturdays.
