Letter to the editor: Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers responds to previous letter to the editor

I’d like to take this opportunity to respond to a letter to the editor of Neuse News that was written by Jennifer Shrader and published Tuesday.

I’d like to thank Ms. Shrader for caring about our county and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office all the way from LaGrange, Ga. However, I want to clear up some of her concerns since she isn’t in law enforcement and — to my knowledge — has never worked a drug case.

A true drug investigation takes significant time and effort, since it is completed by trained drug detectives. The two individuals she wrote about had mandatory prison sentences, which were post-trial and had nothing to do with current investigations.

There was nothing we could have done differently to change the outcome of those situations. We had the opportunity to handle the arrests in several different ways, but this was the best option for the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Adult Correction. The outcome of both situations would have turned out the same way.

The citizens of Lenoir County elected me to stand tall and fight the war on drugs in our county. They want the individuals who are selling this poison to be held accountable and be put in jail. I stand with my deputies and the citizens of this county in this fight and will continue to do so until I am no longer their sheriff.

Ms. Shrader, I welcome you back anytime to Lenoir County to assist with our effort to rid our community of drugs. However, I do not welcome or appreciate you degrading my hard-working deputies, detectives and employees of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office because we didn’t handle a situation the way you see fit.

Sincerely,

Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers
