Lenoir County Farmers Market opens April 12 with fresh strawberries and spring produce
The long-awaited strawberry season has arrived, and with it comes the official opening of the Lenoir County Farmers Market on Saturday, April 12. Located at 100 N. Herritage Street in downtown Kinston, the market will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The opening marks more than just the return of fresh produce. According to Tammy D. Kelly, Ed.D., County Extension Director, it’s a celebration of community and the arrival of spring.
“We are always so excited about the season opening of the Lenoir County Farmers Market, for so many reasons,” Kelly said. “Fresh strawberries and asparagus for one, but also it is the official kick-off of the season. The market is a great place for bringing our community together to enjoy spring and to support our local producers.”
This year’s opening is set to be even more exciting, with the addition of new vendors, including local chefs making use of the Community Kitchen.
“I think the community will be impressed with all of the variety,” Kelly said. “Please come join us!”
Visitors can expect to find a wide selection of locally grown produce and handmade goods. Fresh strawberries will headline the seasonal offerings, alongside asparagus, turnip salad, mustard greens, and farm-fresh eggs. Shoppers will also find baked goods like banana bread, granola, cupcakes, and chocolate cups, as well as large ferns, colorful geraniums, and other spring flowers.
Pat Jenkins, who manages the market, said the vendors are ready to welcome customers back with all the vibrant sights, smells, and tastes of spring.
“Come down to enjoy the fresh produce raised by Lenoir County farmers,” Jenkins said. “There are also bakers, craftsmen, farm fresh eggs and of course the bright red strawberries we’ve been waiting for. There will also be huge ferns, geraniums and other flowers. What a great start to spring!”
In addition to shopping, guests can enjoy hot grilled hamburgers and crispy French fries, making the market a flavorful and festive outing for the whole family.
The Lenoir County Farmers Market remains a vital space for local food, small business support, and community connection — a true sign that spring has sprung in Kinston.
