Gifted Gala to showcase work of LCPS students who are going ‘above and beyond what’s expected’

Some of the best work in technology, art, science, writing and robotics by LCPS students from all 17 district schools will be showcased Tuesday evening at the annual Gifted Gala.

The event, to the held from 6-7 p.m. at Kinston Community Center, is a continuation of LCPS’s efforts of more than 15 years to call attention to the creativity of Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students and students who are “going above and beyond in what’s expected at their school,” according to Melissa Lynch, LCPS director of digital learning and AIG and the event’s organizer.

“It’s a time for us as a school system to advocate for students being creative and students being able to showcase their learning in a variety of ways,” Lynch said. “These are students who are showing greatness.”

The approximately 220 students invited to exhibit this year constitute the largest group in Gifted Gala history and promise to provide the most variety. In addition to a raft of digital and technology exhibits that align with LCPS’s emphasis on STEM learning, on display will be the work of students from high school CTE programs – need your blood pressure checked by health science students? – as well as samples of students’ writing and art.

“A lot of time when we think about AIG students, we think about core content and academics, but our gifted students are spread across all of our specialty areas as well,” Lynch said. “Gifted Gala is a good chance for community members to come see everything that students have a chance to be involved in.”

With the most students and most student work on display in its history, the LCPS Gifted Gala scheduled for Tuesday evening at Kinston Community Center is expected to add even more attendance – and energy – to this scene from last year’s event.
