Obituary: Mary Ann Sparrow

Kinston – Mary Ann Sparrow, 74, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Westview Cemetery at 1:00 PM with Pastor Chris Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery 30 minutes before the service.

Mary Ann was born on February 6, 1951, in Jones County to Jesse and Laura Croom. She was a woman with a heart of gold, always ready to help anyone in need. She was a devoted mother—her daughter Michelle, was the greatest joy and accomplishment in her life. Mary Ann’s warm spirit, strong character, and selfless nature left a lasting impression on those that knew her. In recent years, she courageously faced ongoing health challenges, and now she is at peace, reunited with her parents.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was proceeded in death by her daughter, Michelle Sparrow; her sister, Etta Mae Bell; and brothers, Prentence Croom, Marvin Croom, and Jesse Croom Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Sparrow, of Kinston, her sister, Diane Sanderson of Kinston; her sister, Helen Spain of Virginia; and special friends Joanne Basden and MaryLou Manning.

Mary Ann was blessed with many wonderful caregivers over the years, Angela Butler being the latest and most cherished.
