Kinston Police Department Monday updates
Fraud Arrest – HVAC Scam Warning
On February 20, 2025, a local business owner reported being defrauded by an individual claiming to be an HVAC contractor. The investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Steven Allen Barfield of La Grange, accepted payment for an HVAC installation project but never began the work or returned the advance payment.
Following a thorough investigation, Kinston Police Department investigators charged Barfield with:
Obtaining Property by False Pretense (Felony)
Failure to Work After Being Paid (Misdemeanor)
Barfield was served with the charges on April 4, 2025, by the Pitt County Sheriff's Office while in custody at the Pitt County Detention Center. As of Monday morning, no bond had been issued.
A reminder to our community: Always verify contractor credentials, check for licenses, and be cautious when paying in advance for services.
Shooting Investigation – Dixon Street and George Avenue
On April 6, 2025, officers from the Kinston Police Department’s B-Squad responded to the area of Dixon Street and George Avenue following a report of a shooting.
While canvassing the area, officers were notified that a male subject had arrived at UNC Lenoir Hospital with a gunshot wound. Officers responded and identified the victim as 20-year-old Javaree Herring of Lenoir County. Herring was later transferred to ECU Health, where he is currently receiving treatment for a serious injury.
Kinston Police Department investigators are actively following up on leads related to this incident. Traffic Stop Leads to Methamphetamine Arrest

Vernon Avenue/Laroque Avenue
KPD’s B-Squad officers conducted a traffic stop on Anthony McGee (51, of Havelock) in reference to a moving violation. During the stop, officers conducted a search of the vehicle.
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a bottle containing Methamphetamine. McGee was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lenoir County Jail, where he was held under a secured bond for Possession of Methamphetamine.
VCAT Detectives Seize Firearms During Patrol
April 6, 2025 – 9:00 PM
Joyner Drive, Kinston
On Sunday night, Kinston Police Department’s Violent Crime Action Team (VCAT) was actively patrolling the Jack Rountree area in response to a shooting that occurred earlier in the day.
While in the area, detectives approached three individuals standing near a vehicle on Joyner Drive for a consensual encounter. As detectives exited their vehicle, one male—later identified as Demontrez Olds—reached into his waistband and brandished a firearm. At the same time, a second male—Syriek Evans—pulled a firearm from his waistband and threw it to the ground.
Both individuals were immediately detained, and the firearms were recovered.
Demontrez Olds (19 of Kinston) was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of a Concealed Gun.
Syriek Evans (19 of Kinston) was issued a citation for Misdemeanor Carrying a Concealed Gun.

Checking Station Leads to Firearm Charges
While conducting a license checking station at Airport Road and Nurses Lane, KPD’s D-Squad officers encountered 38-year-old Daniel Deans of Lenoir County.
During the stop, officers observed signs of possible narcotics activity and conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. The search revealed:
A small bag of marijuana
An open container of beer
Three concealed handguns
Deans was charged and released with:
Carrying a Concealed Gun
Simple Possession of Schedule VI (Marijuana)
Open Container of Alcohol

WANTED SUBJECT APPREHENDED
April 4, 2025
300 Block of E. Bright Street
On Friday, officers from KPD’s B-Squad received information about a wanted individual on the 300 block of E. Bright Street.
Officers responded and located 19-year-old Zyquan Sutton of Kinston, who was wanted by the NC Department of Adult Corrections for Interfering with an Electronic Monitoring Device. Sutton attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by officers.
He was taken to the Lenoir County Jail with no bond on the outstanding warrant and was additionally charged with Resisting a Public Officer.

DWI Charges Following Vehicle vs. Structure Collision
April 4, 2025
While patrolling the area, officers with the Kinston Police Department’s B-Squad came upon a vehicle versus structure collision in the 1600 block of N. Herritage Street. Upon arrival, officers observed several individuals at the scene who were visibly upset and involved in a verbal altercation.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ms. Shaliyah Maye (DOB: 10/19/1995), who was found standing in the roadway with the driver’s door open. Officers confirmed that Ms. Maye had been operating the vehicle and noted visible signs of impairment.
Following an on-scene investigation, officers determined that Ms. Maye was impaired. She was transported to UNC Lenoir for medical evaluation and was subsequently issued a citation for Driving While Impaired (DWI).
The Kinston Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is a serious offense and encourages everyone to drive responsibly.
Lenoir County Man Arrested After Suspicious Vehicle Report

Officers with the Kinston Police Department’s B-Squad responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on the 100 block of Hwy 58 South. Upon arrival, they located the vehicle and began searching the surrounding area.
During the search, officers found 50-year-old Joe Stroud of Lenoir County lying down inside a nearby warehouse. He was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with Breaking and Entering.
Stroud is currently being held at the Lenoir County Jail under a secured bond.
