Over the last few years I have become increasingly patriotic, but I have struggled with how Christians should publicly display their patriotism given the divisive nature of our culture. For many years I wanted to separate my patriotism from my Christian faith as if they were two completely different belief systems. In one sense that is obviously true, but I will argue here that American patriotism is tied to Christian theology.
A virus is ravaging our country and our world. In spite of the overwhelming evidence that masks and vaccines work to limit sickness and death, there are people who endanger themselves and others, claiming rights under the banner of personal freedom. The U.S. Constitution, does not grant us so much personal freedom that we can disregard the rights and wellbeing of those around us.
Edith Burns, a Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas, had a habit of introducing herself in the following way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?" She would then explain the meaning of Easter. She was in declining health and was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips.
Our nation may be more divided right now along the lines of race that it has ever been before. Recent events have shaken our country. People of color are especially hurting, and many are angry. What our nation needs now is healing. In order to heal, we must come together. In order to come together, there must be understanding.
As we temporarily shut down Church services as well as many other activities throughout our land, there are several things we should keep in mind. First of all, this is not the time to panic.
This week is Holy Week! Now, more than ever it is a sobering and exciting time for the church. It is the week leading up to Easter Sunday. This is the week we take the time to reflect and remember the events leading up to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
So what do you say— do you tell people “Happy Holy Week?’”
“You could say 'Happy Easter,’ when it’s actually Easter day, or ‘Christ is Risen!’. Normally there are so many activities during the week before Easter. This year is different but should be no less activity in our hearts.
