We are at the point in the summer where the heat feels oppressive and even the plants flop over in the afternoon, and I can relate. Many believe that there is nothing to be done in the garden in the heat of the summer besides keep the weeds and bugs at bay and harvest what you planted in April.
I’ve seen them all tilled up in the side yard, perfectly organized in rows in raised beds, thrown into open space in the flower bed, or even in a collection of mismatched pots on the back deck!
A lot has changed in the last month. For many of us, we have seen changes in how we live, work and shop. One thing that hasn’t changed, is that local farms, farmers markets and garden centers are (mostly) still open. These businesses are considered essential services in accordance with statewide stay at home orders.

N.C. Cooperative Extension in Lenoir County will teach a Master Gardener volunteer training class starting January 24, 2019. The class will consist of 10 weekly classes and a field trip.
There will be no vendors at the Farmer’s Market from now until strawberry season, which will be in April. Rodney, the Pork Skin Man, will be open randomly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. You will be able to tell when he has pork skins by the signs he puts on Vernon Avenue and other places around town.
Grants from Lenoir County Extension Master Gardeners will allow two LCPS teachers to use gardening projects to cultivate students’ interest in science.
