The time has come to minimize politics in redistricting. The 1776 Constitution provided for a House of Commons and a Senate. Fast forward roughly 150 years. The infighting over Senate and House districts is alive and well. The biggest problem has been, and still is, the partisan nature of redistricting plans.
Do you have any idea how much of the Lenoir County budget our commissioners actually control? At most, only 22 percent of the county budget is spent at the discretion of the commissioners. Seventy-eight percent of the budget is allocated to meet mandates.
As the Fourth of July comes later this week, we should use this opportunity to follow the advice of the North Carolina Constitution as we reflect on one of this nation’s most important founding documents, The Declaration of Independence.
