I am writing to you in my capacity as a state legislator in the North Carolina General Assembly and as the Chairman of the House Committee on Insurance. This letter serves to express my strong opposition to the proposed 42.2% increase in homeowners’ insurance rates by the North Carolina Rate Bureau (NCRB), slated to take effect on August 1.
On Thursday, the North Carolina General Assembly ratified the 2023 State Budget (HB 259), which passed 70-40 in the House and 29-19 in the Senate.
During this past legislative session, expanding access to rural broadband and closing the digital divide was a top priority of mine and the Republican-led North Carolina General Assembly. In rural areas, especially in my district in Eastern North Carolina, connection to reliable high-speed internet service is critical to attracting and retaining businesses, improving health care access and ensuring that our children are not left behind in the digital age.
Sen. Harry Brown’s district will receive $3,873,766 to cover immediate expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
North Carolina lawmakers today blasted government restrictions that allow retail stores to operate at limited capacity while prohibiting churches from operating under those same rules. Senator Jim Perry in a letter to Governor Cooper wrote, “Why can’t houses of worship be subject to the same 20% occupancy restrictions that you’ve allowed businesses to operate under?”
