In the mosaic of domestic economic vitality, American businesses are the mortar holding our country together
As a sheriff in rural North Carolina and a staunch advocate for the health and well-being of our residents, I am profoundly aware of the devastating challenges posed by the opioid crisis. Shockingly, the most recent public data available shows that nearly 12 North Carolinians lost their lives each day to drug overdoses in 2022, underscoring the urgent need for action.
Rarely has there been a more challenging or intimidating climate to grow old and retire in. Inflation, public health crises, and looming geopolitical conflicts remind many pensioners and retirees of the turbulent late 1960s and early 70s.
This pandemic has affected every corner of our state, including our state budget needs. For many families, it has also shifted their priorities. Last week, I proposed a budget that tackles the challenges we’re facing today while building for the promise of tomorrow. We can emerge from this crisis even stronger than before if we invest wisely.
Beth Wood, the auditor, said that of “the $800 million [the companies] are sitting on, there hasn’t been any – very little I’ll say – reinvestment or help to those sitting on a waitlist.”
