Crystal Bryant, a career classroom teacher who sets high expectations for herself and for her students at Rochelle Middle School, has been named District Science Teacher of the Year by the North Carolina Science Teachers Association.
Local students in Lenoir and Greene Counties were recently recognized for their outstanding work in Greene Lamp's 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Program. The competition, which was open to middle and high school students, asked participants to submit an original essay, song, or poem on their reflection and research regarding the impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

On Monday, what was supposed to be a normal school day turned into an interesting one at Rochelle Middle School. When students showed up to the cafeteria for their normal lunch period, they were excited to see their Principal Terry Wooten serving them lunch. Principal Wooten stepped up to the plate when she found out that the cafeteria was short-staffed on Monday.

Mike Causey, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal, went to Rochelle Middle School to present a Commissioner's Award for Heroism to Zsakiyah Sutton for her extraordinary actions during a fire in her home last November. “The courageous acts of this young lady helped save the life of her infant brother, and for that she is a true hero,” said Commissioner Causey. “It is an honor for me to present this award to her.”
On the first day of their new leadership program, students at Rochelle Middle School learned the first rule of leadership: lead yourself.

Local artist Seraphim Smith is creating a mural that encompasses the waterBEST logo, the City of Kinston, and the children of the community. waterBEST reached out to Smith after seeing the Kinston Okra Mural on South Queen and Shine Street, and asked him to submit a drawing for a mural for the waterBEST Kinston building where they bottle their water.
