The Beer Barn in Kinston will host "Popp’n Smoke," a community event marking the start of Veterans Day celebrations. Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the event aims to bring the community together while raising funds for veteran service organizations and G.I. Joe’s Living History Museum.
Salute! and G.I. Joe’s Living History Museum are turning the November 11 Veterans Day into Veterans Week with events running from Friday, November 3, through Sunday, November 12.
November 11 became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938 as Armistice Day. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations & Germany in World War 1. The next year, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration to honor the World War 1 soldiers in the United States.

Arendell Parrott Academy honored Veterans Day 2021 with school wide projects, a speaker, recognition of a Patriot, and a series of fine arts performances. On Tuesday, November 9th, classes from first grade to seniors posted veteran-themed displays outside classrooms.
For over 100 years, the descendants of Henry C. and Mary Ann (Rhodes) Blizzard have served in the United States Military through World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Lenoir County Resident Dr. Lonnie H. Blizzard shared the remarkable history of his family.
A Veterans Day Parade was held at the North Carolina State Veteran’s Home in Kinston. Residents were lined up around the building along with staff as members of the community celebrated the holiday. The parade included engine 22 from the Kinston Fire Department, the American Legion, Mooves Dance Studio and Salute.
As with everything else affected by the COVID pandemic, the annual Salute! festivities have been modified to allow us to honor veterans while practicing behaviors that help prevent the spread of the virus.
One week from today is Veterans Day. The name of the day is not Veteran’s Day – as if the day belongs to a single veteran. Nor is the name of the day Veterans’ Day – as if it belongs only to veterans. Veterans Day is a holiday established for all of us to have an opportunity to remember and honor all veterans.
The 19th Annual SALUTE! Pre-Veterans Day celebration is changing things up a bit. They're inviting the public to join them in the parade on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 am on Herritage Street. It's free to participate and anyone and any Veteran can show up by 10:30 am at the Hardees at the corner of Vernon and Herritage Street and be a part of the parade.

The annual Salute! program held each year around Veteran's Day in Kinston has made a few changes for this year. The annual festivities to honor veterans a bit early will commence Friday.
