A man was placed in jail after a Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office investigation revealed he had stolen $40,000.
Lenoir County built the later named W.E. “Billy” Smith Detention Center a little over six years ago to keep inmates in-county and reduce the financial burden on Lenoir County taxpayers. Today, staffing shortages at the Lenoir County jail have led to approximately 35 inmates being housed in other counties at a cost of $50 per day per inmate.
