I have never been the biggest fan of turnips, but I have discovered over the past few years that if prepared in the right way, they will take on a variety of unique flavors depending on your recipe. Turnips are often mistaken for a member of the root family, in reality the turnip belongs to the cruciferous family whose cousins are Brussels sprouts, kale and broccoli. Even so, most often consumed is the bulbous root of the turnip.
It’s so obvious that something is wrong! Things are definitely not like they used to be. It wasn’t so long ago that we all felt reasonably safe to go out on our streets. Now in some of our major cities, everybody is afraid, especially at night. We are all concerned with human smugglers, sex traffickers and dangerous drugs.
Today I want to talk about the hurting in this world and the importance of how we look at it. Dr. Simmons Patrick shared an item with me a few years ago that someone had sent to him about an elderly relative of theirs who was nearing the end of his days on this earth.
Saturday, October 15, is going to be a day packed with events. Last Monday, I shared information about the “Autumn’s in the Air” fall festival scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. This event is a fundraiser for the CSS Neuse Gunboat Association.

The late great Otis Redding sang a song called "Sitting On The Dock of the Bay." I have often wondered what inspired him to write those lyrics, where he just sat from sun-up to sun-down, watching ships roll in. What caused him to feel so lonesome?
As we move deeper into the school year, we want to remind everyone about the opportunities available for learners of all ages at Neuse Regional Libraries. Many fun and educational weekly programs are available for little learners at each of our eight locations and throughout the community.
Let’s hope you won’t need this information, but it is Hurricane Season and we are in eastern North Carolina, so here you go!! The best way to survive a disaster and to be able to quickly recover is to “be prepared”!!
I'm sure you have heard the expression "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and it is obviously good advice. I had the good fortune of being in the construction business a few years ago and viewing first-hand the superb talents of many dedicated craftsmen, such as carpenters.
October 15 will be a jam-packed. The day begins with “Breakfast on the Boat” at the CSS Neuse II in cooperation with the Ironclad Races Half-Marathon and 5K runs. The half marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. The 5k starts at 7:45 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until around 10:30 a.m.
