In an inspiring showcase of local talent, 12-year-old Lillian Grace Martin has been accepted into the Joffrey Ballet School's Jazz and Contemporary Intensive program in Las Vegas. Martin, a dedicated dancer from a young age, expressed her astonishment and excitement at this achievement.

Most asparagus you will see is green, but there are other varieties you may sometimes see, white, which is more delicate and difficult to harvest, and purple, which is smaller and fruitier in flavor. No matter the type you choose, asparagus is a tasty, versatile vegetable that can be cooked in lots of ways or enjoyed raw in salads.

A rabid raccoon has been discovered in La Grange. The Lenoir County Health Department (LCHD) received confirmation from the North Carolina State Laboratory that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was located in the area of La Grange. This is the first animal identified as rabid in the county this year.
A New Bern man has been arrested in Lenoir County on a narcotics charge.
Case Update During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Tyghjheri Jones, 20, of Goldsboro. On April 5, 2024, members of the Kinston Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and State Bureau of Investigation devised a plan to apprehend Jones.

A former teacher assistant at Southwood Elementary School has been charged with embezzlement. Jennifer West, 43, of Kinston, who served as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Treasurer for the school, has been charged with four counts of embezzlement stemming from an investigation into the PTA at the school. The investigation revealed nearly $16,000 of PTA funds were misapplied in the span of two months.

Susan Elizabeth Spence, known to friends and family as Beth, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024, from a long illness. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at a later date.
