The Greene Rams traveled to Farmville on Friday night in search of their first win of the season after dropping their first two games of the season. The Rams have struggled to score this season and those struggles continued as they fell to the Jaguars 67-13.
Despite the loss, Greene’s 13 points was their highest point total of the season. However, the Jaguars would have 25 steals to help guide them to victory.
“We’re a very young team. We only have one senior,” said Greene coach Tammy Elbert. “We’ve had to get back to the bare fundamentals. We’ve had to rely on girls who have had virtually no experience. The girls are finding out that high school basketball is much faster than middle school and there are a lot of growing pains. We lost six seniors last year, so this is going to be a long process this year.”
The game was scoreless for the first 90 seconds of the game until Jordan Joyner nailed a layup for Farmville. The Jags would go on a 9-0 run to start the game. The Rams couldn’t get into a rhythm as Farmville stifled any attempts they had at making a good quality shot. Di’ziya Thompson would finally put the Rams on the board, but the Jaguars would keep scoring and capitalized on numerous traveling violations and turnovers by Greene Central. Farmville would lead Greene 26-2 after the first quarter.
The Jaguars continued to pile on their lead in the second quarter. The Rams could only muster six shots during the entire second frame; one of them a successful three pointer by Laura Rodriguez. But Farmville held a 49-7 lead at halftime which would activate a running clock for the second half.
Jayla Wilkins would lead the Rams with four points. For Farmville, Jordan Joyner had 16 points and Je Shyra Camron had 13 points.
