Taveras, Pelham selected for Futures All-Star Game
A pair of Opening Day Wood Ducks will be a part of another All-Star team.
C.D. Pelham and Leody Taveras were selected for the 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game rosters, which were released Friday afternoon. Both played in the Carolina League All-Star game on June 18, and will now have the chance to play at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., July 15 against each other, as Pelham will represent Team USA and Taveras playing for the World squad.
Last season, pitcher Jonathan Hernandez was the first Wood Duck to play in the Futures Game, representing the World Team.
Pelham, 23, was promoted to the Double-A Frisco Roughriders on June 25 after converting on all 11 save opportunities for the DEWDs. Pelham also got the save in the Carolina League All-Star Classic and as a DEWD, he went without allowing an earned run with the lead all season.
Taveras, 19, is one of eight teenagers to play and was the youngest position player to debut on an Opening Day roster in the Carolina League. Taveras is batting .245 with three home runs, four triples and 29 RBIs with a team-leading 12 stolen bases.
The game will be live on the MLB Network at 4 p.m. This is the 20th Futures Game with Team USA winning 12 matches and seven of the last eight, including a 7-6 victory in 2017.
