The Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Department recently announced on their Facebook page that renovations at the Grainger Stadium grandstand are progressing. The next phases of the upgrade process include sandblasting, sealing, and the reinstallation of seating areas.
The Down East Wood Ducks will host this year’s Kinston-Lenoir Battle of the Badges on August 19th-20th, 2023. This two-day softball tournament will be held at Historic Grainger Stadium beginning at 8 am on Saturday.
The disappointment felt by our community this past week as a result of the Down East Wood Ducks (DEWD’s) team being sold and eventually moving to South Carolina, is less a result of business and market forces out of our contol and more a sense of losing hope our community can sustain minor league baseball indefinitely.
UPDATE: The Spartanburg Post and Courier is reporting that the Down East Wood Ducks will move to South Carolina as early as the 2025 season.
There is still no official update from the Down East Wood Ducks or their owners, Texas Rangers, on the potential sale of the team. As we all wait, here are some documents from the City of Kinston related to the Down East Wood Ducks, including stadium improvements and the lease extension discussions through 2031 and potentially 2033. The documents include the minutes and agenda discussing the matter, and the signed contract extension.
Rumors have been circulating that the Down East Wood Ducks, the minor league team of the Texas Rangers based in Kinston, North Carolina, might be sold to Diamond Baseball Holdings, a subsidiary of global sports and entertainment company Endeavor.
The Wood Ducks announced that they will be hosting the Cornhole Classic on Saturday, September 17th at Grainger Stadium, sponsored by Brooks Poole, Realtor. Gates open at 10 am with the event starting at 11 am. It is a “rounder format” with American Cornhole League Rules. After pool play teams will be broken up into three brackets with cash prizes for the top three teams in each bracket!
KPD partners with Down East Wood Ducks for National Night Out
The Down East Wood Ducks are coming off a series win (4-2) against the Columbia Fireflies and will be starting a fresh, six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats (7-8), the Class-A Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
